MIDCAB / OPCAB Surgery

MIDCAB (Minimally Invasive Direct Coronary Artery Bypass)

In conventional heart operations, the heart is completely exposed through a midline incision in the chest, the circulation of the body is supported on a heart-lung machine and the heart is stopped cold. Select patients may now have their coronary bypass performed using instruments slipped through small "keyhole" incisions between the ribs. The (MIDCAB) is performed on the beating heart, usually bypassing the left internal mammary artery to the left anterior descending artery (LIMA to LAD). This approach reduce the surgical discomfort and trauma to the chest and ultimately speeds the recovery process.

OPCAB (Off-Pump Coronary Artery Bypass)

Patients who require coronary bypass to multiple vessels can still benefit from a less invasive off-pump or beating-heart approach to their surgery. Using a combination of techiques and advanced equipment the arteries on the surface of the heart are exposed and stabilized then shunted and finally grafted without the need for a "heart-lung machine". The OPCAB (off-pump coronary artery bypass) has been shown to reduce blood loss, cost and hospitalization times.
