Michael H. Culig, MD, FACS

Dr. Culig joined Pittsburgh CardioThoracic Associates and The Western Pennsylvania
Hospital from Dubois Regional Medical Center in Dubois, Pennsylvania, where
he served as medical director of the Heart Center. A Fellow of the American
College of Surgeons, Dr. Culig is a member of numerous professional societies,
including the American Medical Association, Pennsylvania Medical Society, Allegheny
County Medical Society, Society of Thoracic Surgeons, Pennsylvania Association
of Thoracic Surgeons, and Pittsburgh Thoracic Surgical Society.
Dr. Culig's list of accomplishments include serving as the president of Pittsburgh
Cardiovascular Aid International, co-chairman of the Cardiovascular Work Group
of the Pittsburgh Regional Health Care Initiative, and American director of
Project Coronary in Lviv – a philanthropic medical mission in Western
Ukraine. Additionally, Dr. Culig has served as the vice chairman of the Department
of Surgery for West Penn Allegheny Health System.
Dr. Culig's interests include innovations in applying beating heart surgery
and arterial vascularization to coronary artery bypass surgery, cardiac valve
reconstruction and replacement, and complex reconstruction of the thoracic
aorta including extensive use of homografts. He has pioneered the use of heparin
substitutes in heart surgery and laser revascularization.
